Things got a little tight for the No. 1 University of Alabama softball team but an offensive explosion in the late innings moved the Tide past Connecticut in game two of the 2008 Adidas Golden Panther Invitational at Miami, Fla., on Friday afternoon.

Alabama's 2008 Coaching Clinic will feature some of the best to ever teach the game of football. Bill Belichick, Vince Dooley, Al Groh and Dean Pees are scheduled to speak in Tuscaloosa this year. The Alabama women's basketball team fell to the No. 3 ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers 85-58 Thursday night in Coleman Coliseum. Candace Parker led all scorers with 19 points while Tierney Jenkins paced the Tide with 12 points. After the day, Alabama moves to 8-19 overall and 1-11 in SEC play. Tennessee improves to 24-2 on the season and 10-1 in league games.
Leon Marlaire, a key player on Alabama's legendary 1950's "Rocket 8" is one of the 12 men who will be honored in March at the SEC Basketball Tournament as a member of the Chick-fil-A SEC Basketball Legends class of 2008.

TUSCALOOSA -- Coach Jim Wells returned this summer from a week's retirement to an Alabama baseball team with plenty of questions amid low expectations.
Bama's top hitter hopes to catch on defensively
Alex Avila can ruin an Abbott and Costello routine in three innings. Who's on first. What's on second. I don't know is on third? Nope, they're all Avila. Alabama's best slugger wields a lethal glove. A strong pitcher in high school, he can do his damage from the mound to boot.
On June 21 of last year, Jim Wells retired from his duties as the head baseball coach at Alabama. Memories of Wells' remarkable coaching career were spilled out across the state, but they stopped suddenly a week later - when he returned as the Crimson Tide's coach.
Since the departure of All-Americans such as Andy Phillips, G.W. Keller, Roberto Vaz and Sam Bozanich, Alabama has not had much success fielding a consistently dominant offense. With the Crimson Tide returning a lot of pop in the middle of the lineup and adding some table-setters at the top, head coach Jim Wells said he thinks all the pieces are available for a high-octane offense.

The game marked the last home appearance for three seniors as the Tide fall to 8-20 overall and 1-12 in league play. The Lady Rebels improve to 12-14 on the year and 6-7 in the SEC.

Alabama sophomore Elizabeth Hughes posted Alabama's highest individual finish on the women's side of the Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships which came to close here in the Alabama Aquatic Center tonight when she took third in the platform diving event.
After a tense victory over Illinois earlier on Saturday afternoon, the No. 1 University of Alabama softball team picked it back up offensively, cruising to an 8-3 win over hosting Florida International in the Tide's fourth game at the Adidas Golden Panther Invitational in Miami, Fla.
Cal Poly pounded out 19 hits and took advantage of five Crimson Tide errors en route to a double header sweep of the University of Alabama baseball team, 16-7 and 6-2, Saturday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Cal Poly improved to 2-1 with Saturday's sweep, while Alabama fell to 1-2 on the season.

AUBURN - Lucas Hargrove pumped his fist to the cheering crowd. Frank Tolbert danced with Aubie, the Auburn mascot.
As good as Alabama was in its 10-1 season-opening win over Cal Poly on Friday night, the Crimson Tide was that bad on Saturday. Poor pitching and poor defense plagued the Tide in a 16-7 loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, and the bats didn't show up for game two, a 6-2 loss.
AUBURN - Quan Prowell's alley-oop dunk from Frank Tolbert set the tone for the second half as he and Lucas Hargrove led the Tigers past the Crimson Tide 88-76 Sunday. Prowell had 17 of his 22 points in the second half, including three 3-pointers and three crowd-pleasing dunks down the stretch.
The Alabama women's basketball team got off to a quick start Sunday, but midway through the first half Ole Miss caught fire and went on a 13-0 run to put them ahead. The Lady Rebels continued their hot shooting in the second half, and the Crimson Tide never could close the gap, losing 70-54.
The UA swimming and diving teams competed against the top teams in the nation as they hosted SEC Championships this week. Four-time defending national champion Auburn's men and women teams finished in first place. Florida finished second in both meets. Alabama's sophomore diving sensation Aaron Fleshner won a gold medal on the first day of competition in the springboard.

The No. 16-ranked Alabama women's golf team capped off its first tournament of the spring with a team title.
